Situation and trend


In Latin America and the Caribbean, the under-five mortality rate is 23 per 1,000 live births in 2010. This indicator has declined 57% from 1990 to 2010 for an average annual rate reduction of 4.3 per 1,000 live births. According to these estimates this indicator is on track to achieve MDG 4.

Situation 2010
The estimates of Under-five mortality rate in the Region of latin America and the Caribbean is 23 per 1,000 live births. This estimate is lower than any other developing region in the World, however there is a wide disparity among countries in the Region of the Americas.

In 2010, nine countries (Canada, Cuba, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, United States of America and Chile) displayed levels of under-five mortality below 9.2, similar to figures of most developed countries. By contrast, other eight countries (Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, Guatemala, Plurinational State of Bolivia and Haiti) had under-five mortality levels higher than 27 per 1,000 live births with extreme situations in Bolivia (Plurinational State of) and Haiti, with a rates of 54 and 165 per 1,000 respectively.

Ischemic heart diseases (IHD) is the first cause of death in the Region of the Americas.

In 2007, IHD caused:

  • 662,011 deaths, 13% of total deaths in the Americas
  • 255,586 deaths, 9.6% of total deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean
