Uruguay is the first country in Latin America free of the insect that transmits Chagas disease

The Pan American Health Organization certified Uruguay as the only country in Latin America free of Triatoma infestans as a public health problem. The insect that transmits Chagas disease, known as the kissing bug, lives in mud huts, especially in rural areas and affects 40,000 people in the country. The President Mujica advocated for the public to be alert to continue in this status and relapse.
