Treatment success rate for new pulmonary smear-positive tb cases


Situation:  The mean of treatment success rate for new pulmonary smear-positive tb cases in the region of the Americas in 2009 was 80% with a wide interval of 46% Argentina (worse situation) to 100% Barbados and Dominica.

Nine countries --Dominican republic, Nicaragua, Mexico, Honduras, Bolivia, El Salvador, Cuba, Barbados and Dominica--  are in the best situation with rates from 85 to 100.

Trend: In the Region of the Americas this indicator slightly increased over time in most of the countries.

Situation:  The mean of treatment success rate for new pulmonary smear-positive and extrapulmonar tb cases in the Region of the Americas in 2009 was 71% with a wide interval of 40% in Aregntina (worse situation) to 100% in Grenada.

Treatment success rate for retreatment tb cases

Situation:  The mean of treatment success rate for retreatment tb cases in the Region of the Americas in 2009 was 64% with a wide interval of 24% in Chile (worse situation) to 100% in Antigua and Barbuda.

Ischemic heart diseases (IHD) is the first cause of death in the Region of the Americas.

In 2007, IHD caused:

  • 662,011 deaths, 13% of total deaths in the Americas
  • 255,586 deaths, 9.6% of total deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean
