Community Health Workers Trained in Mental Health Promotion and Prevention in Ciudad Juarez

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, 27 July 2011 (PAHO/WHO) – Since 2001, through the World Health Report, the World Health Organization (WHO) has increased its efforts to create awareness about the importance of mental health care in the field of public health. Daily, these efforts strengthen worldwide programs, health policy and health practices. In this context, the increasing violence and insecurity that now resides in Ciudad Juarez, demands specific actions and programs for victim assistance, prevention of risk factors and strengthening community capacity to achieve their development prospects. To this end, community health workers are a useful tool for their ability to impact specific populations whom often lack access to other mental health services.

Therefore it is important that community health workers increase their knowledge of mental health problems most commonly that affect people in their communities, the causes and care facilities and resources available to address this population. Consequently, the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) U.S.-Mexico Border Office (PAHO / WHO) in collaboration with the Center for Development and Therapeutic Care, AC (CEDAT) will conduct a training workshop on promotion and prevention in mental health with a  component of early detection of mental disorders for the pipeline and reference to the centers, for: community workers, social workers, health workers who are currently working on prevention and promotion of mental health and psycho-emotional, to be held on:
