PAHO/WHO and the Use of Social Networks

In May 2006, PAHO/WHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses launched a new blog as a contribution to the development of information technologies and knowledge sharing in the information society and to be in touch with health professionals and other people throughout the Region of the Americas.

In November of the same year, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, declared 17 May as World Internet Day.

These events highlight the importance of worldwide access to information and knowledge sharing in today's world.

For PAHO/WHO, access to health information is an integral part of human rights and requires us to network with partners to expand our local and regional capacities and multiply social capital in our countries. PAHO/WHO is committed to using emerging information technologies and methodologies for knowledge management and communication and has adopted Web 2.0 tools and methodologies as a new way of working in the Organization and with Member States.
