Bioethics studies the ethical problems that arise in relationship to health, such as in the delivery of medical care, the promotion of public health and the conduction of biomedical research.

Our work

We strengthen capacities in bioethics, and support Member States and PAHO in the integration of bioethics in their policies and activities.  Our work covers all areas of bioethics:  public health ethics, medical ethics and research ethics.  The support of national bioethics commissions is one of our priorities.

The Bioethics Program houses the Secretariat of PAHO Ethics Review Commitment (PAHOERC), which oversees research with human subjects in which PAHO is involved.

History

PAHO’s Bioethics Program is part of the Gender, Diversity and Human Rights Office. Formerly based in Santiago, Chile, the Program now operates from PAHO’s headquarters office in Washington, DC. It was originally established in 1994 as a collaboration initiative with the government of Chile and the University of Chile.
