Distribution of broad causes of death


Situation: In the Region of the Americas approximately  44% of total death occurred before the age of 70 years old. In lower and upper middle income countries about 52% of deaths occurred before that age compared with 35% in high income countries, an excess of 17% of deaths.

Ischemic heart diseases (IHD) is the first cause of death in the Region of the Americas.

In 2007, IHD caused:

  • 662,011 deaths, 13% of total deaths in the Americas
  • 255,586 deaths, 9.6% of total deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean
