Reaching Out the World: The Role of Institutional Partnerships

PAHO Director conference outlines the global health situation and its associate challenges, underlining particularly how in the aftermath of the earthquake disaster in Haiti, where PAHO is playing an important role in developing institutional partnerships to leverage resources, working alongside governments, private sector, medical and dental schools, public health associations and other stakeholders throughout the Americas in order to promote better health and standards of living in the Region, also the role of universities is important to keep health on the global agenda.

Emergency situations have major implications for health systems, global health plays integral role in development of nations, and the status of a country's health systems and services has a great impact on its ability to progress along the development continuum. When thinking about institutional partnerships in global health, the sum is much greater than the parts. In this regard, universities and learning institutions could play a major role in development and implementing global health initiatives - Dr. Roses added.

PAHO Director talked about the many challenges health institutions face worldwide, such as high level of poverty and inequity, low standards of health and health care, lack of access to basic medications and health services, and a growing list of diseases and how these challenges are complicated by limited human and financial resources.

Nevertheless, Dr. Roses quoted, despite these obstacles, great progress has been made and more progress continues to be made, especially when institutions begin to combine resources to achieve great synergies for complex public health problems.

Throughout her presentation, Dr. Roses discussed the role of PAHO/WHO in global health, and how the Organization contributes to stronger health systems and enhanced, coordinated technical assistance, where it is needed most.

PAHO Director concluded that coordination of technical assistance within sectors has been effective in the acute phase of the emergency, with responsibilities for the leadership of activities distributed among clusters. Strengthening the capacity of the Government of Haiti to take over reconstruction, as is ensuring that support from the international community is appropriate, strategic, and aligned with government priorities.

Universities and learning institutions also must continue to play a key role with their unique ability to foster innovative, knowledge-based solutions, and to provide access to specialized and highly trained pool of health workers, institutions such as yours make an enormous impact on the international response to global health challenges. 

I would like to encourage the leadership here at the University of the Sciences to reach out to the world alongside PAHO and other institutions so that, together, we may leverage our resources to promote better health and standards of living worldwide.

Walter Cohen Middle East Center for Dental Education-Advisory Committee, and the Institute of Musculoskeletal Health & Arthritis of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; Dr. Shannon Marquez, Executive Associate Dean for Academic & Faculty Affairs and Associate Professor of Health Policy & Public Health at Mayes College; Dr. Andrew Peterson, Dean for Mayes College of Healthcare Business & Policy; and Dr. Steven Larson, Assistant Dean for Global Health Programs and Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
