The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in collaboration with the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), convened an unofficial regional conference on innovation for health in September 2009, based on the World Health Organization’s “Global Strategy and Plan of Action on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property.” Although all elements in the strategy clearly integrate a single tool, at the conclusion of the discussions particular emphasis was placed on the first three elements. A diverse group of stakeholders from the Region of the Americas attended the conference and discussed the situation of innovation in health in the Region. A consensus was reached on recommendations to promote national, sub-regional and regional systems of innovation to help develop attainable and appropriate health products that help resolve the priorities in health in PAHO member countries.
