Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 25 August 2010 (PAHO) - Until 27 August the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, the Fogarty International Center - U.S. National Institutes of Health and the Sabin Institute are promoting an international symposium called "30 years after the eradication of smallpox: lessons, legacies and innovations." Besides celebrating 30 years without the disease, the meeting is discussing current and future challenges in the field of immunization. The event takes place at the Manguinhos Campus of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro.



The Director of the Pan American Health Organization, Dr. Mirta Roses, was present at the symposium, which provides a forum for discussion on the shape of immunization and public health programs, in their scientific, technological, social, political, humanitarian and economic aspects.

Recognized speakers will be presenting. Global health leaders from several continents, major international health organizations, officials of the Ministry of Health of Brazil and its programs, and representatives from major international donor organizations are present at the event, which also involves researchers, scientists, former leaders and participants of programs for the eradication of smallpox from the different countries.
