Maternal mortality: Global estimatesEvery day in 2008, about 1000 women died due to complications of pregnancy and child birth. The risk of a woman in a developing country dying from a pregnancy-related cause during her lifetime is about 36 times higher compared to a woman living in a developed country. Maternal mortality is the health indicator that shows the widest gaps between rich and poor, both between countries and within them. |

Ischemic heart diseases (IHD) is the first cause of death in the Region of the Americas.
In 2007, IHD caused:
- 662,011 deaths, 13% of total deaths in the Americas
- 255,586 deaths, 9.6% of total deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean
