Distribution of causes of deaths


Situation: In the Region of the Americas approximately  44% of total death occurred before the age of 70 years old. In lower and upper middle income countries about 52% of deaths occurred before that age compared with 35% in high income countries, an excess of 17% of deaths.

Mortality statistics are fundamental to guide priorities in public health policy, planning, and resource allocation. Reliable information on levels of mortality and leading causes of death enables decision-makers to strategically design, fund and implement programs to ensure the greatest possible impact on longevity and quality of life.

Ischemic heart diseases (IHD) is the first cause of death in the Region of the Americas.

In 2007, IHD caused:

  • 662,011 deaths, 13% of total deaths in the Americas
  • 255,586 deaths, 9.6% of total deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean
