What is RAVREDA/AMI? The Amazon Network for the Surveillance of Antimalarial Drug Resistance (RAVREDA) refers to the network organized in 2001 by several countries of the Amazon subregion, with PAHO, to respond to the challenge of antimalarial drug resistance in the Amazon.

The Amazon Malaria Initiative (AMI) was launched in 2001 by the United States Agency for International Development, Office for Infectious Diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean (USAID/LAC) as its mechanism for focusing its financial and technical resources in support of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) in Latin America.

The Amazon Network for the Surveillance of Antimalarial Drug Resistance (RAVREDA) refers to the network organized in 2001 by Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela, along with PAHO, in response to the challenge of antimalarial drug resistance in the Amazon. As its work progressed, RAVREDA partnered with international institutions and local organizations in the countries to achieve its goals, which have now been expanded to include the various components of the Regional Strategic Plan for Malaria in the Americas 2006–2010, as aligned with national and global strategies and goals. French Guiana is currently joining the network as an observer, while efforts are also in progress to link with Mexico and the Central American countries.

The Amazon Malaria Initiative (AMI) is the initiative launched in 2001 by the United States Agency for International Development, Office for Infectious Diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean (USAID/LAC), as its mechanism for focusing its financial and technical resources in support of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership in Latin America. With strong emphasis on the importance of promoting coordination of efforts among all partners in the Region, AMI is implemented by five USAID partners:

• PAHO, which functions as the AMI secretariat as well as lead technical support to RAVREDA.
• Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States.
• Management Sciences for Health's Rational Pharmaceutical Management Plus (MSH/RPM Plus) program.
• United States Pharmacopoeia's Promoting the Quality of Medicines in Developing Countries
