STEPwise Approach to Stroke Surveillance

STEPS-Stroke

The WHO Stepwise Approach to Stroke Surveillance

Stroke is the second leading cause of death in the world and one of the top ten causes of death and disability in the Americas. As a result, WHO developed STEPS-Stroke which forms a framework for standardized surveillance and data collection and analysis.

PURPOSE

STEPS Stroke provides a useful tool for low and middle income countries in the Region to begin, improve, and strengthen their current capacity for surveillance of cerebrovascular diseases.

DESIGN

STEPS was designed to prevent and treat stroke victims by identifying and categorizing them into the following:

  • Information of stroke patients admitted to health facilities (step 1)
  • Identification of community-based fatal stroke events (step 2)
  • Estimates of community-based non-fatal stroke events (step 3)
