Status of Influenza A(H1N1) in the Americas

  • Confirmed cases reported in other countries in the Americas:
    • Mexico has 2,893 reported confirmed cases, 66 deaths;
    • USA, 4,714 confirmed cases with 4 deaths;
    • Canada, 496 confirmed cases with 1 death;
    • Costa Rica, 9 confirmed case 1 with death;
    • Panama, 40 confirmed cases;
    • Colombia, 10 confirmed cases;
    • Brazil, 8 confirmed cases;
    • El Salvador, 4 confirmed cases;
    • Cuba, 3 confirmed cases;
    • Guatemala, 3 confirmed cases;
    • Argentina, 1 confirmed case;
    • Peru, 1 confirmed case.
  • The World Health Organization maintains pandemic alert of Phase 5. There is no evidence of sustained community level human-to-human transmission outside of the Americas.

Status of Influenza A(H1N1) in other Regions

  • The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths: Australia (1), Austria (1), Belgium (1), China (4), Denmark (1), Finland (2), France (14), Germany (12), Ireland (1), Israel (7), Italy (9), Japan (4), Netherlands (3), New Zealand (7), Norway (2), Poland (1), Portugal (1), Republic of Korea (3), Spain (100), Sweden (2), Switzerland (1), Thailand (2), and the United Kingdom (71).

PAHO/WHO Response

  • Oseltamivir shipments continue to arrive in PAHO/WHO Member Countries in the Americas from the PAHO/WHO stockpile: Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela have received shipments.
  • To date, PAHO/WHO has deployed 31 people to support to Member Countries. Countries are also requesting additional support in the following areas: risk communications, public health specialist, health services, mental health, and administrative to four additional countries. These requests will be processed and mobilized in the next week.
  • PAHO/WHO activated its humanitarian supply management system, LSS/SUMA, to manage supplies related to the response to influenza A(H1N1) in Mexico. A four-day training course was held for health staff from 20 priority states in Mexico on how to set up and use the LSS/SUMA system.   • Today, Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization gave a statement on “Sharing of influenza viruses, access to vaccines and other benefits.” Highlights include:
    • Dr. Chan extended thanks to: “health officials, clinicians, and scientists in all these countries, and the many experts and laboratories located elsewhere, for their unflagging vigilance and diligence in keeping close watch over this virus.”
    • And urging: “What the world needs most, right now, urgently, is information at all possible levels.” To read the full statement, please click here.
  • PAHO/WHO has received emergency grants from Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance of USAID and the humanitarian desk of the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development to support activities in affected or potentially-affected countries. These activities will encompass:
    • Response to public health emergencies;
    • Outbreak investigation and strengthening surveillance;
    • Laboratory strengthening;
    • Health care;
    • Health promotion, communication and advocacy;
    • Logistics.
