Andean countries prepare to make the first joint procurement of medicines

Lima, August 13th, 2009. Andean countries have agreed to jointly purchase medicines that are considered high cost, orphan or required in emergency situations using the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Strategic Fund.

COPRESIDA confirms its participation in PAHO Strategic Fund (May 29th, 2009)

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Ministry of Public Health (SESPAS), and the Presidential Council of AIDS (COPRESIDA) signed an agreement for the procurement of strategic public health supplies, in order to guarantee treatment for people living with HIV and AIDS.   The agreement was signed by Drs Bautista Rojas Gómez, Public Health Secretary, Gustavo Rojas Lara, Executive Director of  COPRESIDA, and Cristina Nogueira, Representative of PAHO/WHO in the Dominican Republic

  The Dominican Republic is linked to the Strategic Fund through the agreement signed between the Ministry of Health and PAHO/WHO in 2006. PAHO/WHO through the Strategic Fund will support the country in planning and procurement will strengthen national capacity in the procurement and quality control of products, as well as in the application of standards of quality assurance and procurement management.  

The Health Secretary, Doctor Bautista Rojas Gómez, stated that the agreement will improve processes in the provision of quality health services, including health management, guaranteeing access to medicine and hence considerably benefiting people in Dominican Republic.  

In turn, Dr. Gustavo Rojas Lara stated that, this agreement will guarantee the efficient supply, and sustained quality of medicines in the area of HIV/AIDS. With this model the role of the State in health is strengthened and the articulation of the institutions within the sector promoted, thus to increase the national HIV response and impact.

Argentina joins PAHO Strategic Fund

As of December 16th 2008, Argentina signed an agreement with PAHO to participate in the Regional Revolving Fund for Strategic Public Health Supplies (Strategic Fund).Argentina is now the 20th country in the region to have signed an agreement for participation.

Anti retroviral (ARV) Bid Solicitation 2009 completed

PAHO Strategic Fund has completed the first annual joint multy-country bid solicitation for ARVs.By consolidating demand, and implementing a single bid for interested countries, economies of scale could be achieved, and a single low price could be offered to all countries.Bid documents received were opened on October 31st, 2008 at 10 am at PAHO headquarters in Washington DC, where all prices offered were publicly announced.Of the thirty one (31) products, PRO received seventeen (17) offers from suppliers.

Central America Countries meet to discuss Access to Anti-malarial medicines, Guatemala City, 11 – 12 November 2008

Central American countries are meeting this week in Guatemala City to discuss the challenges they are currently facing in access to Anti-malarial medicines, including selection, procurement and supply management. The meeting is be co organized by PAHO and Management Sciences for Health and aims to assess access determinants and propose options to improve access to anti-malarial medicines, including using the PAHO Strategic Fund to consolidate demand for pooled procurement.
