El Paso, TX, June 5, 2012 (PAHO/WHO) – According to the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Union for International Cancer Control research, cancer cases are projected to increase by more than two-thirds worldwide over the next 20 years from 12.7 million in 2008 to 21.4 million by 2030. However, an estimated 30–40 percent of these cases could be prevented. To address this situation, the City of El Paso Department of Public Health in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) United States-Mexico Border Office and other local organizations held the Partners in Cancer Prevention Conference on June 5th, 2012.
The purpose of this conference was to educate health professionals on the importance to learn to prevent and control cancer in the area. The topics to be discuss are: Disparities and impact on access and quality of cancer prevention and control in the Latino population; Cancer in the Americas- successful programs and resolutions of PAHO; El Paso demographics and health system analysis; partnerships and focus on primary prevention and there will be a Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) workshop for Community Health Workers.
Guest speakers included: Maria Fernandez, Ph.D, Latinos Contra el Cancer, Principal investigator at the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research School of Public Health, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston; Enrique Perez-Flores, MD, Advisor, Health Surveillance and Disease Prevention and Control at PAHO/WHO U.S. – Mexico Border Office; and Stephanie Flora, Executive Director at the Susan G. Komen Foundation, El Paso Affiliate.
In addition to the 30–40 percent of cancers that can be prevented by reducing risk factors, another 30 percent of cases can be cured or put into remission through screening and early detection followed with effective treatments.
