Regional Conference on Diabetes and Obesity June 3-4, Las Cruces, New Mexico

The US- Mexico Border Office of the Pan American Health Organization presented the US- Mexico Border Diabetes Prevention and Control Project, the importance of physical activity and diabetes education tools for Community Health Workers.

The University of New Mexico presented a project they have in collaboration with the FDA, a physical activity video for disable persons, in chairs. Followed by a Nutrition presentation offered by the Ben Archer Health Center and the NMSU Extension of Home Economics

The second day workshop was titled “ Tip of the iceberg: Diabetes and Obesity on the US- Mexico Border. More than 100 health care professionals attended from the Las Cruces, El Paso, and the Ciudad Juarez area.

The US- Mexico Border office of the Pan American Health Organization presented the results of the prevalence Study from the US-Mexico Border

 The conference offered a presentation form the University of Houston Health Science Center and the Texas University at Brownsville on the subject of Analysis of obesity, diabetes, and insulin –resistance in Mexican American adolescents in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

The last presentation was title How Diabetes and Obesity affect you by the Lovelace Medical group

At the end of the presentations, a round table discussion took place for more that 45 minutes the audience had many questions that were answered appropriately. The audience was overwhelmed by the information presented and this motivated them to commit to start and/ or continue to work in diabetes prevention and control.
