Community health workers are trained in mental health promotion and prevention in Ciudad Juarez

Cd. Juarez, Mex., July 27, 2011 (PAHO/WHO)  –  Since 2001, through the World Health Report, the World Health Organization (WHO) has increased its efforts to create awareness about the importance of mental health care in the field of public health. Daily, these efforts strengthen worldwide programs, health policy and health practices. In this context, the increasing violence and insecurity that now – resides in Ciudad Juarez, demands specific actions and programs for victim assistance, prevention of risk factors and strengthening community capacity to achieve their development prospects. To this end, community health workers are a useful tool for their ability to impact specific populations whom often lack access to other mental health services.
