 College Station, TX, October 24, 2011 (PAHO/WHO) – According to World Health Organization’s studies, vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for people under 25 worldwide that is why the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) U.S.-Mexico Border Office and the Texas Transportation Institute Texas A&M University System (TTI) have partnered to collaborate on a roadway safety research. On September 15, 2011, PAHO/WHO USMBO and TTI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to pursue research and program opportunities related to roadway safety.
The main purpose of the MOU is to implement the Teens in the Driver’s Seat program (TDS) along the U.S.-Mexico Border, especially with stakeholders in all 16 sister cities. The first venture will be to conduct a binational pilot project in which young drivers in Ciudad Juárez will be introduced to the Teens in the Driver Seat concept, with TDS students in El Paso being directly involved.
The MOU was signed by PAHO/WHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses; TTI Director Dr. Dennis Christiansen; and as witnesses Dr. Maria Teresa Cerqueira, Chief of the PAHO/WHO U.S. – Mexico Border Office and Dr. Eugenia Maria Rodrigues, PAHO/WHO Road Safety Advisor.
