 El Paso, TX, October 1st, 2011 (PAHO/WHO) – It is important that border communities and border health professionals are well trained about how to prevent, control and manage chronic diseases including diabetes and heart diseases. That is why the Center of Excellence to Counter Chronic Diseases and Promote Health on the U.S.- Mexico Border (COE) hosted a series of training workshops in Tijuana, Baja California, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, and Reynosa, Tamaulipas during June, August and September 2011, respectively. The main goal of these workshops was to reinforce training for health professionals and community health workers or promotores.
About the workshops
The purpose of these workshops was to provide professional training for health professionals and promotores, to strengthen their skills and improve the management of patients with chronic diseases, as well as motivate them to increase their efforts for early detection of patients and persons at risk of chronic diseases emphasizing interdisciplinary work. They were trained using “The Road to Health Toolkit,” which consists of a 12-session program.

The COE generates and provides quality education and training for health professionals and Community Health Workers (CHW) or promotores, emphasizing chronic diseases prevention, control and management on border population. The COE also enhances and supports health promotion as a sustainable way of achieving lifestyle changes to prevent and reduce risk factors for chronic diseases as well as augment protective health factors.
