ABOUT BienESTAR
The
BienESTAR or Building a research Agenda on Water, Sanitation, Toxic
Chemicals, and Public Health in the colonias’ objective was to
investigate the quality of access to drinking water and sanitation
services and safety perceptions of community residents in border
colonias and other rural areas of west Texas.
“The
purpose of the meeting is to bring people together, people who is
interested in the community, government agencies, NGOs, etcetera. Let’s
find out how we can get together and provide new research, new
information, identify issues to address and get participation from our
community,” stated W.L. Hargrove, Director of the Center for
Environmental Research and Management at UTEP.
According to the study, there still are colonias without piped drinking water service.
“There
are some communities and people who doesn’t have this privilege and
they should have it because this is part of the humans’ rights, so let’s
keep working on it.” Said Dr. Maria Teresa Cerqueira, Chief, PAHO(/WHO)
U.S.-Mexico Border Office.
