General information on Anguilla

Anguilla is the most northerly of the Leeward Islands and covers 91 km2. It is mostly flat, the highest point being Crocus Hill at 65 m above sea level. Anguilla lies in the tropical storm belt and as a result, is susceptible to hurricanes.

The Valley is the capital but due to its size, there is no urban and rural distinction. The island is accessible by two seaports and an airport. Anguilla continues to be a territory of the U.K, the Governor and the Deputy Governor being appointed by the Queen. The Governor presides over the executive council and reports to the legislative council. General elections are held every five years.

The 2001 census determined that the population of Anguilla was 11,561 and estimated a 2003 population of 12,200. The annual increase in the population between 1992 and 2001 was 3.2%. The 2003 birth rate was 11.4 per 1,000 with the annual number of live births fluctuating from 193 in 2000 to 139 in 2003.

It is important to note that the number of live births does not accurately reflect the number of babies born to Anguillians, as many Angullians give birth overseas and are not captured in national statistics. The estimated life expectancy at birth for males is 76.52 and for females is 81.1. There has been increasing migration into Anguilla, particularly from neighboring Islands.
