This initiative, based on the Safe Hospitals Strategy, was launched the first of October 2008 in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua and it was implemented until February 28, 2010.
The objective of the program was to promote the strengthening of health facilities (urban or rural, large or small) and make them resistant to disasters and, therefore, remain accessible and functioning at full capacity and in the same infrastructure in case of emergency.
During the 15 month duration of the project several workshops were made on the use of Hospital Safety Index (a tool developed by PAHO/WHO that allows a rapid assessment of the health facilities safety level) and hospital disaster planning.
