PAHO/WHO Calls on Donors to Resume Funding for Health in Haiti

So far important results have been achieved in Haiti with funding provided by the international community, including a decrease in the number of cholera cases and the provision of health services to people living in displacement camps.

Among the activities related with the response to the emergency, the distribution of medicines has been made for the treatment of 180,670 severe cases and 512,680 mild cases of cholera in one year since the beginning of the emergency. PAHO/WHO also helped develop and distribute over 100,000 posters and 250,000 laminated pages with guidance on cholera prevention and treatment.

Surveillance of Risk Factors in Shelters during Emergencies

In emergency situations or disasters caused by meteorological events, such as the floods currently affecting several countries in the region, changes in environmental conditions are usual and they increase the risks to public health, particularly in those places where it is necessary to shelter the affected population.

It is important to take action for the timely identification of risk factors and take immediate decisions to ensure the population with protection measures and health promotion in these situations.

The Cholera Epidemic Maintains its Hold in Haiti

There are currently 30 CTCs, 169 CTUs, and 766 ORPs functioning in-country. The end of the rainy season has contributed to a considerable drop in cholera cases. Currently, an average of 300 cases per day has been observed all over the country, in comparison to 500 cases per day in November. The department currently reporting the highest mortality rates is West. The number of cholera cases is stable or decreasing in the departments of North, North-East, Artibonite, Center, West, South-East, South and Grand Anse, whereas cases in the North-West, are increasing and in Nippes department, the situation can be described as unstable with small peaks.
