Martinique Situation Report - 17 August

  • Hurricane Dean moved beyond Martinique on Friday afternoon, August 17, but storm conditions would continue for the rest of the day.
  • One death was attributed to a heart attack. About 1/3 of the island’s population, or 140, 000 people, are without electricity.
  • A storm surge of more than five meters (16 feet) was reported and winds as high as 87 mph on Martinique and 64 mph on Dominica.
  • Waves in the St. Lucie channel exceeded 10 meters, and gusts of 170 km per hour were measured on the Atlantic side of Martinique.
