La Dra. Carissa F. Etienne fue elegida Directora de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) por los Estados Miembros de la Organización el 19 de septiembre del 2012. Su mandato, de cinco años, comenzó el 1 de febrero del 2013. Desde marzo del 2008 hasta el 1 de noviembre del 2012, la doctora Etienne fue Subdirectora General de Sistemas y Servicios de Salud, en la Organización Mundial de la Salud,
Ginebra (Suiza).
