The objective of the workshops was to train mortality coders on the correct procedure for coding conditions causing death, as listed on the medical certificate of cause of death, and the process by which the underlying cause of death is selected. Such training is vital to support CAREC’s ongoing initiative to improve the quality of the sub-region’s mortality data.

The 5 day workshops included intense practical training to develop and enhance skills in coding conditions causing death according to the International Classification of Diseases and other Health Related Problems (ICD) system of classification. This was followed by an in-depth explanation of the selection of the underlying cause-of-death rules using the National Centre for Health Statistics (NCHS) Decision Tables. A mortality coder from St. Vincent and the Grenadines participated in the workshop conducted in Barbados
