Morbidity Review of Communicable Diseases in CAREC Member Countries, 1980 - 2005

PDF Print E-mail

The Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC/PAHO/WHO) was established on January 1, 1975 and communicable disease surveillance data for notifiable diseases are available from 1980.  The current Multilateral Agreement for the operation of CAREC mandates that it is responsible for (among other things) the overall promotion and coordination of the regional communicable disease surveillance system for its 21 English and Dutch speaking member countries.

During the period 2002-2005, there was a major review and revision of the regional communicable disease surveillance system for CAREC member countries.  The main reasons for the revision of the system were to improve communicable disease prevention and control efforts in countries; and to strengthen national and regional capacity for timely and appropriate response to public health emergencies, as would be required under the revised International Health Regulations (IHR (2005)). Implementation of the revised regional communicable disease surveillance system occurred in January 2006.

This document provides a review of communicable diseases reported to CAREC from member countries during the period 1980-2005.  During this period, there were changes in the list of notifiable diseases and the number of countries submitting data for specific diseases and syndromes as reflected in the data.

Data reported in this document are as at October 2008.
