Strategy and Plan of Action on Mental Health

The Strategy and Plan of Action on Mental Health adopted in October 2009 by the Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) is now available on PAHO’s web page. This document embodies the experience gained in the Americas, particularly over the last two decades, and expresses the commitment of the governments of the Region. The implementation of the Strategy, which covers a 10-year period, will be starting this year.

In support of the implementation of the Strategy and Plan of Action, PAHO will cooperate technically with countries for the development of their mental health policies; support the systematic review and dissemination of information and scientific evidence to strengthen services; extend better practices, innovative models, and lessons learned; and promote cooperation among countries.

The Directing Council requested to regard mental health as a priority and to strengthen the health sector’s response to this issue. In 2010, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Caracas Declaration, a milestone that marks the formal beginning of the mental health restructuring process in the Region. This is an opportune time in history to address this issue and devote special efforts to the implementation of the Mental Health Strategy and Plan of Action.
