On 10 September, officials of the new “National Committee for the Care of People with Epilepsy" were sworn in by the Minister of Health, María Isabel Rodríguez. The Committee was created to coordinate, give advice and monitor the epilepsy care decentralization process. It will be coordinated by Mauricio Ramírez Zamora.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, in 2011 there were 28,304 epileptic patients treated in the health system. PAHO/WHO Representative in El Salvador, José Ruales, said there are plans to work jointly with Guatemala and Honduras to reduce the gap in epilepsy care. One of the key components to achieve this goal is the provision of services at the primary health care level.
