Mental health planning workshop in Trinidad and Tobago
A 2-day mental health planning workshop supported by PAHO’s Regional Advisor on Mental Health,
Devora Kestel, and PAHO’s Trinidad Country Office, through Health Systems Consultant, Carlene Radix, was held at the Ministry of Health Headquarters on February 4th and 5th, 2013. The Workshop was launched with a welcome by Ag.
Chief Medical Officer, Akenath Misir; remarks by the PAHO/WHO Representative, Bernadette Theodore-Gandi; and an address by the Minister of Health, The Hon. Fuad Khan. The Minister gave his support to the process of decentralization of mental health services, with integration in primary care and development of community based specialized services.

Status of mental health care services in Barbados
When it comes to the delivery of mental health care services in Barbados, data suggest that the care provided locally is comparable to that of more developed countries.
The information above was recently revealed by Health Minister Donville Inniss, who noted that the country has budgeted well to ensure adequate provision of mental health care services and a good ratio of mental health professionals, as needed for the local population.

Cuba: Mario Pichardo receives Director’s Award 2012

Cuba, received the Director's Award 2012 for his outstanding contribution to technical cooperation in that Country Office.
Guatemala: National workshop on adolescent depression
From January 23 to 25, 2013, mental health professionals and other health workers and officials from the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance of Guatemala participated in a workshop on identification, diagnosis and treatment of depression in adolescents. The objective was to provide training in a methodology for the care of young people with depression in primary health care settings.

Honduras: Training in Psychological First Aid (PFA)
The
College of
Psychologists of
Honduras collaborated with NGO Doctors Without Borders in providing training for the use of WHO’s Psychological First Aid (PFA) Guide. Over 100 primary health care professionals from four CESAMOS (health centers with a physician and a dentist) and partner organizations participated in the training. It was certified by Doctors Without Borders, the Secretary of Health, and the National University of Honduras Non-Formal Education Department.
