PAHO and the OAS join forces to reduce demand for drugs in the Americas

Washington, D.C., 9 May 2012. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Organization of American States (OAS) have signed an agreement under which the two organizations will work together to reduce demand for illicit drugs in the countries of the Americas, through coordinated technical cooperation, based on human rights, public health and scientific evidence.

Antigua y Barbuda: Workshop to develop a national policy on mental health  

At the beginning of the year, mental health was placed high on the priority list of Antigua & Barbuda’s Ministry of Health. Within this context, technicians from the Ministry of Health, the Clareview Psychiatric Hospital and PAHO/WHO gathered at a three-day workshop in June to discuss and develop a working document that will form the basis of a National Mental Health Policy.

Masters Degree in Mental Health, National University of Córdoba, Argentina

The second year of the Masters Degree in Mental Health of the National University of Córdoba officially started in May. It is organized by the Faculty of Psychology and the Faculty of Medical Sciences, with the collaboration of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO - WHO), and is sponsored by the Organization of Iberoamerican States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) and the Psychologists’ Association of Córdoba.

Celebration of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

During the celebration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, June 26, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) jointly organized the conference “Drug Consumption Policies based on Evidence: advances, challenges, and perspectives.”

WHO QualityRights Tool Kit

 

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released the “QualityRights Tool Kit. Assessing and improving quality and human rights in mental health and social care facilities.” The Tool Kit is an essential resource, not only for putting an end to past neglect and abuses but also for ensuring high quality services in the future.
