El Salvador: Progress in mental health decentralization

Santa Ana, 14 June, 2011. The National Hospital San
Juan de Dios de
Santa Ana has opened the first Mental Health Unit established in a general hospital outside
San Salvador’s metropolitan area, which marks an important milestone in mental health decentralization. It is intended to provide mental health care to users requesting it, in addition to addressing referrals from primary care centers in the western area, whose specialized community health teams (ECOS) have already included the community mental health component and psychological care.

Haiti: National Strategic Plan for Mental Health

The first workshop on the "National strategic plan for mental health" was held in Port au Prince on 27-28 June, 2011. The event was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Public Health and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO / WHO). The workshop was attended by 47 professionals from the Ministry of Health, psychiatric hospitals, the penitentiary administration office, the national office on disability, universities, national and international NGOs, and from the Haitian Psychology Association (AHPsy).

Argentina: Creation of a Latin American network for mental health rights
Buenos Aires, 11- 12 August, 2011. With the purpose of protecting the human rights of people with mental illness, influencing public policy and promoting community-based services, civil society organizations from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay created the Latin American Network of Users, Families and Volunteers for Mental Health Rights.

PAHO, Seventh-day Adventists Partner to Strengthen Health Efforts in the Americas

The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists have agreed to work together to improve health in Latin America and the Caribbean through a new partnership aimed at enhancing both organizations’ technical cooperation and support to countries.

Maryland, USA: first increase in beer and wine taxes in 38 years
A historic step was taken by
Maryland’s General Assembly by approving a 3-percentage-point addition to the states 6 percent sales tax on beer and wine, the first increase in 38 years.

mhGAP Newsletter
The mhGAP Newsletter is published twice a year by the World Health Organization’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. The purpose of this bulletin is to keep all stakeholders up to date with what's happening in WHO “Mental health Gap Action Programme” (mhGAP). The programme aims at scaling up care for priority mental, neurological and substance use disorders especially in low- and middle-income countries.
