Strategy and plan of action on epilepsy: consultation process in Honduras and Guatemala

This year, the Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) will discuss the Strategy and plan of action on epilepsy. This has special significance since it is the first time the issue of epilepsy will be addressed by the ministers of health of the Region.

Guatemala: National Strategy on Mental Health

A workshop on the National Strategy on Mental Health was held in  Guatemala City, on December 8-9, 2010. Rigoberto Rivera, National Mental Health Coordinator, referred to the current situation of the Strategy, and Víctor López to the National Mental Health Survey. Both presentations led to a discussion about the mental health care context in the country.

New Mental Health Law enacted in Argentina

On 2 December 2010, the President of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, enacted the law number 26,657. This event was attended by the Minister of Health, Juan Luis Manzur; the Chief Cabinet, Aníbal Fernández; the former congressman and author of the project, Leonardo Gorbacz; the National Director of Mental Health, Yago Di Nella; PAHO/WHO Deputy Director, Socorro Gross; PAHO/WHO Representative in Argentina, Antonio Pagés, and Hugo Cohen, PAHO/WHO Subregional Adviser on Mental Health for South America, among others.

Panama: Tobacco use cessation workshop

Between  11 and 13 January, the Mental Health programs of the Ministry of Health (MINSA) and of the Social Security Fund (CSS), together with PAHO/WHO, organized a workshop for trainers on tobacco use cessation skills. The purpose of the workshop was to train general practitioners, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and social workers responsible for the cessation clinics that MINSA and CSS are establishing in the fourteen health regions of the country.

International Conference on Community Mental Health - An option for Bolivia?

The International Conference on Community Mental Health was organized by the NGO Christian Blind Mission (CBM) in Cochabamba, in late 2010. The Conference was sponsored by the Ministry of Health and Sports of Bolivia, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) local office, the Association of Psychologists and the Bolivian Society of Psychiatry.

Some of the main conclusions are expressed in the International Conference Declaration (only in Spanish)  reached by consensus among all participants after two days of intensive collaborative work.

Master’s Degree in Mental Health, National University of Córdoba, Argentina

The Master’s Degree in Mental Health was approved in 2010 by the National University of Córdoba and the National Commission for University Evaluation and Accreditation of Argentina (CONEAU - Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria). The course begins on March 10, 2011. 

Río Negro, Argentina: “El Bolsón Mental Health Social Enterprise”

 

The cooperative firm “El Bolsón Mental Health Social Enterprise” was selected as concessionaire for the visitors’ services at “Cabeza de Indio” (Indian’s Head), a recreational area in El Bolsón, province of Río Negro, in the Argentine Patagonia. Thus, this social enterprise adds a new venture to its other activities already addressing community mental health care: Cerro Perito Moreno Mountain Refuge, the Municipal Sports Hall restaurant, and catering services for parties and meetings.

This newsletter will be published by the World Health Organization’s Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse twice a year. The purpose of the mhGAP Newsletter  is to keep you up to date with what's happening in WHO mental health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP). This programme aims at scaling up care for priority mental, neurological and substance use disorders especially in low- and middle-income countries.
