Mental health in the prevention of violence and injuries in the northern border of México


Ciudad Juárez, México, 17 June, 2010 (PAHO/WHO) – Based on the number of daily homicides, Ciudad Juarez is considered one of the most violent cities in the world. Violence does not only affect the victims of murders and their families but the entire population. Children are afraid to play on the streets, youth are forced to become hired killers or drug dealers. Tension at home, suicide rates, domestic violence, and sex abuse rise but the victims are afraid to report them.

Master Degree in Mental Health, National University of Córdoba, Argentina: “The Academy at the Service of Services”

Since 2008, in Argentina, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) has led an initiative aimed at strengthening the integration between education and health care through the creation of Mental Health Degree and Postgraduate Courses. WHO Mental Health Policy and Services Guidance Package is the linchpin of these courses, which are linked to prevalent local issues from a public health and interdisciplinary perspective.

PAHO mental health consultants visited the Valparaíso and Bío Bío regions in Chile

Concepción, Chile, 16 June 2010. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Subregional Advisors on Mental Health, Hugo Cohen and Víctor Aparicio, together with the Regional Advisor on Disabilities and Rehabilitation, Armando Vásquez, and a delegation from the Ministry of Health of Chile, held a meeting with local authorities from Valparaíso and Bío Bío. The purpose of this international consulting mission was to guide and help readapt the structure of the psychiatric and mental health care network in both Chilean regions.

Panama: Research on “Injuries and Alcohol”

Within the framework of the agreement on public alcohol policies between PAHO-WHO and the Autonomous Community of Valencia ( Spain), a research study on "Injuries and alcohol" is currently being developed in Panama and five other countries of the Americas. The training of the Panamanian interviewers and supervisors was carried out in Panama City, on June 21-22.

The course was given by Cheryl Cherpitel (USA) and Guilherme Borges ( Mexico).  The institutions participating in the study in Panama are the Nicolás Solano Hospital, of La Chorrera; the Amador Guerrero Hospital, of Columbus; and the Chicho Fábregas Hospital, of Veraguas. The study is conducted in the emergency services of these hospitals and the number of cases included is 500 per country.  

Online Mental Health Community

The Global Initiative on Psychiatry (GIP) has recently launched an Online Mental Health Community.  The aim of the web-platform is to establish a community that connects people working on mental health issues worldwide, in order to improve mental health care in low and middle-income countries.

The Global Initiative on Psychiatry (GIP) invites to join the online mental health community in order to: CONNECT with people interested in mental health issues; SHARE information about mental health projects, organizations, events and needs; and ADVOCATE for mental health as an important part of development aid. 

INEBRIA: International Network on Brief Interventions for Alcohol Problems

A group of researchers got together to form an international network of people interested in promoting alcohol screening and brief interventions across the world. It is called INEBRIA (International Network on Brief Interventions for Alcohol Problems) and is supported by the World Health Organization and the Health Department of the Government of Catalonia in Barcelona. The overall aim is: “To promote wide implementation of brief interventions in a variety of settings for hazardous and harmful alcohol consumption at local, national and international levels.”

Launching of the book “Mental health in the community” in Perú

 The Regional Project on Mental Health and Consumer Health of the Pan American Health Organization and PAHO/WHO Representation in Perú, together with the Expanded Textbook and Instructional Materials Program (PALTEX) sponsored the public presentation of the second edition of Mental health in the community.    

On July 5th, the book was officially launched at the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University in Lima. The event was attended by Hugo Cohen, PAHO Subregional Adviser on Mental Health, and by local authorities.

Online screening and intervention for alcohol: seeking research

Evolution Health Systems Inc. in Canada is looking for research partners in the rest of the Americas to help adapt a virtual screening and intervention tool related to alcohol for other languages and cultures. The screener is already available in Spanish and Portuguese.

The general version of the tool is available at: http://www.checkyourdrinking.net, and there is also an adapted version for University students: www.checkyourdrinkingu.net, already being piloted at a few universities.

American Public Health Association 138th Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, USA, November 6-10

PAHO Regional Advisor on Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Maristela Monteiro, will present her scientific research at this premier public health event on November 9, 2010. The title of her presentation will be: the "Burden of alcohol consumption in the Americas and the regional implications of the WHO global strategy".

Best practice in estimating the costs of alcohol – Recommendations for future studies

This report aims to summarize best practice in estimating the attributable and avoidable costs of alcohol, and to make recommendations for making such estimates in future studies.

The European Commission’s Communication on alcohol and the WHO framework for alcohol policy – Analysis to guide development of national alcohol action plans

This public health analysis examines the supporting documentation for the formulation and implementation of the European Commission’s 2006 Communication on a strategy to reduce alcohol-related harm and the framework for alcohol policy in the WHO European Region.

This publication is only available on-line. 

 

Prevention of acute drug-related mortality in prison populations during the immediate post-release period.

 

 

This report identifies the main areas that need to be improved to decrease the risk of overdose death. Linking prison health and public health systems closely is essential to mitigating the risk. Recommendations cover preventive responses across all levels of the justice system.
