    Support for mental health during the AN1H1 flu epidemic in Mexico

    The importance of mental health was evident during the recent AN1H1 flu epidemic in Mexico.  It is said that the fear or anxiety generated by the epidemic was spread more easily than the virus itself.  Additionally, there was a burnout of the relief teams resulting from the stress caused by the increased workload and pressure generated by an emergency.  
     
    Technical Cooperation between Guatemala and Panama on “Mental Health in Indigenous Populations”

    A project of technical cooperation between Guatemala and Panama designed to develop the protection of mental health of indigenous populations has been approved.  Its primary goal is to strengthen the mental health plans for indigenous populations in Guatemala and Panama, combining traditional and formal treatment methods and services.   

    Training Workshop on Basic human rights and fundamental freedoms of people with mental disabilities-Prevention of inhumane and degrading treatment

    Mexico City, 14-15 April, 2009.  In the Fray Bernardino Alvarez Psychiatric Hospital auditorium a training workshop on basic human rights and fundamental freedoms of people with mental disabilities with a focus on the prevention of inhumane and degrading treatment was celebrated. The workshop was organized by the Mexican National Humans Rights Commission with the collaboration of the Secretary of Health and PAHO/WHO.  

    Epilepsy Law in Argentina

    Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders that can affect any person regardless of age, sex, race or social status.   In April of 2009, the Argentine Government regulated the National Epilepsy Law.  This law considers three fundamental aspects for those who live with this disorder:  the right to receive free anti-epilepsy medication when they lack coverage, no labor, scholastic or social discrimination, and the implementation of permanent education plans about epilepsy and of educational dissemination campaigns targeted at the general community, the patients and families as well as health workers.  In order to execute this plan a technical commission consisting of experts, organizations, patients and relatives supported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) was created.

    Mental Health and Emergencies in the Caribbean

    Active ImageIssues regarding mental health and emergencies are currently being prioritized as part of a project called “Disaster Risk Reduction in the Health Sector of the Caribbean,” implemented by the area of Emergency Situations and Mitigation in Cases of Disaster (PED) in PAHO and funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

    Nursing and Mental Health in the Dominican Republic

    Active ImageSanto Domingo, Dominican Republic, 28-29 April, 2009. A workshop on “Nursing and Mental Health” took place as part of the activities of the agreement of cooperation between countries (Nicaragua, Cuba and the Dominican Republic), with PAHO/WHO’s technical support, and centered on the theme “primary attention and mental health: coordination between levels and the role of nursing”.

    Workshop in the Cayman Islands – The Mental Health Policy

    Cayman Islands, 8-9 May, 2009.  The First National Mental Health Workshop was organized in collaboration between PAHO and the Ministry of Health aimed at developing a mental health policy for the country.

    Meeting about the Community Model and Psychiatric Reform
    Local will and leadership, gender equality, creativity and permanent innovation

    Active ImageSantiago, Chile, 5-6 March, 2009. First meeting of the technical cooperation project between Peru, Argentina and Chile on “Promoting Mental Health in Primary Health Care Settings”. Mental health workers and other professionals from various disciplines attended the meeting, as well as healthcare teams and leaders of organizations of users and families. There were also participants from different organizations, including representatives from the PAHO offices, Dr Hugo Cohen, PAHO/WHO Subregional Advisor on Mental Health and authorities from the ministries of health of each country. 

    The goals of the meeting were the interchange of experiences of community models in mental health and of transformation of psychiatric hospitals in the three countries, as well as the empowerment of key actors to promote this transformation. One of the results hoped for is the development of at least one pilot project of the community model and psychiatric reform per country. 

     XXV Argentine Psychiatry Conference

    Active ImageMar del Plata, Argentina, 22-25 April, 2009.  The XXV Argentine Psychiatry Conference took place under the title “Mental Health: A Public Health Problem.”  The PAHO/WHO Subregional Advisor on Mental Health, Dr. Hugo Cohen, carried out a presentation describing the advances in the use of the World Health Organization Assessment Instrument for Mental Health Systems (WHO-AIMS) in the country.

    Honduras: Workshop on Human Rights and Mental Health

    Active ImageTegucigalpa, Honduras, 8-9 June, 2009. A workshop on “Basic Human Rights and fundamental freedoms for people with disabilities” was celebrated and organized by the National Mental Health Program of the Secretariat of Health and PAHO/WHO. It was inaugurated by Dr. Lilian Reneau, PAHO/WHO Representative in Honduras, and professionals from various backgrounds of health, social services, justice and DDHH movements from the country attended.
