15 February 2011 – Belize City – The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in Belize conducted a 3-day Biostatics Workshop for statistical clerks and infection control nurses from the 4 Health Regions in Belize. The training workshop was held on Feb 7-9 2011 at The Aguada Hotel, Santa Elena Town, Cayo District.
The objective of the workshop was to enhance epidemiological surveillance at the district level; strengthen capacities in use of biostatistics to ensure coordination, technical skills, knowledge and support to communicable disease surveillance at all levels of the health system.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Jose Perez, PAHO/WHO Belize International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) Focal Point, noted that the training was an activity being implemented from the Plan of Action for Strengthening Surveillance and Response Core Capacities in Belize. He also stated that it is in fulfillment of the country’s IHR 2005 obligations and in meeting the deadline of 2012.
The facilitator emphasized the major role of the participants in the efficient management of data for epidemiological purposes and in particular for early detection of a potential communicable disease outbreak that could be of international concern.
The positive feedback from the participants demonstrated that they gained knowledge which they plan to share with other staff members upon return to their respective health facilities. They unanimously expressed a renewed energy to undertake their duties and having a clearer understanding of their critical role in surveillance.
The Ministry of Health remains committed to meeting its international commitments and is diligently implementing actions identified from the core capacity assessment conducted in 2009.
