Representatives of various public institutions of Costa Rica met to develop an eHealth proposal to facilitate access and availability of technical, scientific and public health information through the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). This meeting took place in San Jose, Costa Rica, during 6-7 September 2012.
The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), with support from the Spanish Cooperation, provided technical cooperation to facilitate tools and methodologies to support Costa Rica in the formulation of a national eHealth plan, in response to the request of the Minister of Health, Dr. Daisy Maria Diaz Corrales.
This initiative aims to enhance equitable access to health services through the effective and efficient use of information technologies, and to strengthen the skills and knowledge of health workers.
The eHealth components include: electronic record, use of mobile devices, healthcare services using information technologies (telehealth), virtual training and education, continuing education in ICTs, digital health services, standardization and interoperability between different technologies and software applications to exchange and use of data in an effective and accurate manner.
Costa Rica has made significant advances in eHealth framed in the National Plan for Science and Technology in Health. Projects currently in progress include the development of electronic health records, online availability of health statistics, the Virtual Campus of Public Health, the Observatory of Human Resources, among others.
Meeting participants included representatives from the Ministry of Health; Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social; Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología; Consejo de Investigación en Ciencia y Tecnología (CONICIT); Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones; Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad; RACSA; Instituto de Alcoholismo y Farmacodependencia; Colegios profesionales de médicos, farmacéuticos, enfermeras, microbiólogos y nutricionistas; Consejo de Educación Superior Privada (CONESUP); Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos; and Dirección de Migración y Extranjería.
