Costa Rica, with the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), begins the process of developing a National Strategy and Plan of Action on eHealth in response to the challenge of improving public health in the Region through the use of innovative tools and methodologies, and technologies of information and communication technologies (ICTs).
The Strategy’s main objective is to strengthen equitable access to health services through the effective and efficient use of ICTs across the country’s strategic objectives in health.
The Plan of Action covers the first steps within ICT capacity building in health and the use and applications of ICTs at different levels of management throughout the country. It also looks to promote the dialogue in the coordination between the various institutions of the health system and other public sectors, as well as partnerships among the public and private sectors and civil society to achieve national consensus.
The working sessions for the development of this Strategy and Plan of Action, which took place 7-9 June 2012 in San Joseé, Costa Rica, were attended by the Minister of Health of Costa Rica, Dr. Deisy Corrales; Knowledge Management and Communications Manager of PAHO, Marcelo D ‘Agostino; Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning Advisor of PAHO, David Novillo, and staff of the Ministry of Health and the Caja del Seguro Social.
