Presentation of Report on Antimicrobial Resistance

PAHO Member States reviewed and discussed the public health impact of antimicrobial resistance and requested that PAHO develop a strategy and plan of action to contain this problem.

Antimicrobial resistance was the theme of World Health Day 2011, under the slogan: Antimicrobial resistance: no action today, no cure tomorrow. “The theme emphasizes the importance of establishing and enforcing measures that can reduce and prevent the spread of drug resistant forms of disease,” stated Marcos Espinal, Area Manager, Health Surveillance and Disease Prevention and Control at PAHO.

During a roundtable discussion this week, representatives of the countries deliberated on the sanitary, social and economic impact of antimicrobial resistance, the degree of resistance in the Region and its trends, and the multifaceted approach needed to contain resistance. They concluded with the preparation of a report and a request that the Organization prepare a regional strategy to contain this threat to public health.
