Expert Urges Resistance to Antimicrobial Resistance to “Preserve the Miracle of Antibiotics”

The Director of the Board on African Science Academy Development of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, Patrick Kelley, addressed the health authorities of the Americas gathered at PAHO’s 51st Directing Council PAHO, urging them to prevent antimicrobial resistance to “preserve the miracle of antibiotics, the basis of global health during the last 50 years.”

The specialist said that “when public interest is threatened, it is time for governments to exercise their leadership.” He indicated that the emergence of a resistant organism affects a country and its neighbors and “requires a joint solution and international cooperation.”
